Nicolas, Yves and Laetitia start pruning the vines

One of the most important points in the chain of « creating » a champagne, vine pruning directly determines the quality of the grapes, and the champagne. It is a long and difficult manual labour for the winegrower, exposed to weather during the harsh months of champagne winters. But it is one of the most interesting jobs of the vine! Indeed, the action of the winemaker on the plant is paramount for the conduct and the fate of the plants, as well as for the coming harvest.

Pre-pruning the vineyard

The grape harvest is complete, the fermentations also. Clotilde and Nicolas are now devoted to the sale of champagne and end of year wine shows. Yves works in the vineyard and Laetitia in the cellar.

An intergenerational organisation

One of the particularities of the Champagne Marc Chauvet company resides in the distribution of work. The vineyard is maintained by men, under the direction of  Nicolas, and wine making is provided by women, under the impetus of  Clotilde.

 

 

 

Distribution of roles during the grape harvest

The Pressing Centre is managed by muscular men, while the winery belongs exclusively to women. The small dishes served midday and evening are lovingly cooked by the older members…
